For our family, this sightseeing adventure lived up to Cripple Creek's motto: "Real Fun Real Colorado".

We extended our stay because there was one more activity that we wanted to do before we left this area.  We wanted to tour the "World's Greatest Gold Camp" in Cripple Creek, which is a city about 45 minutes away from Colorado Springs.  In Cripple Creek, we wanted to tour the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, but before the tour, we stopped by the Cripple Creek Heritage Center where we learned about:

  • the history of this area and the founders of Cripple Creek
  • the geology of this area and the discovery of gold
  • the industry of mining and the life of miners

Then we headed to the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, which is named for the woman who struck gold here in 1891.

On a tour of this gold mine, we had a chance to:
  • squeeze into a skip which transported us 1000 ft under ground
  • listen to a tour guide who was an actual gold miner
  • learn the history of this mine and hear stories about the life of a hard rock miner
  • saw mining equipment and learn about the evolution of mining techniques
  • work in a mine and have some fun
  • see stalactites in this man-made cave and search for gold veins in this mine
  • ride in a mine train and travel through dark tunnels
  • pick out a gold ore sample as a souvenir from the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine
