While the story of Buffalo Bill takes place primarily in Wyoming, this story begins in at Trail Days in a suburban Oklahoman town....
The Santa Fe Depot opened in 1904 as a station for the Santa Fe Railroad. It has been a museum since 1982, and houses some of the best kept secrets in Pott County! If you're looking for a local history lesson, this is the place to go...
The oldest house in town stands on these grounds, and it's something to see. The boys were astounded at how tiny it was! Two floors made it a large house for its period, but each room was only about one hundred square feet. The stairs were so steep and narrow...I couldn't imagine walking down them with anything in my hands, or in the middle of the night!
Out back, a longhorn steer was patiently waiting to be shown off during the next show time. Next to him, we found this random tent with a flagpole...
Inside, we discovered Buffalo Bill and his Wild West (History) Show!! The boys thought that this was the best part of the whole event, and we stayed here for most of the afternoon. Bill talked with them about his role in the Pony Express, his friendship with Sitting Bull, and the new Wild West Show he was planning to put on with Annie Oakley. He quizzed the boys and they learned about his different weapons.
Mom and Dad were distracted by the music coming from the quad, so we said goodbye to Bill and headed over to watch some (very talented) teens from the local Historic Dance group. The heat and humidity were beginning to take their toll, so we headed into the Depot Museum for some much-needed cool air...Inside, we found a one-room schoolhouse and a fabulous train set showing the town in 1942. This exhibit is always available at the museum, so we will have to come back to visit again!! In the meantime, we will be reading We Were There on the Pony Express this week, and studying Buffalo Bill just a bit further.... Won't you join us?? (Look! The governor did!!!)
